Treating Depression and Substance Use Disorders
The integration of treatment for substance abuse disorders and for depression is the focus of this workshop. Topics will include a general overview of depressive symptoms and medical interventions for the treatment of depression. While, participants will learn an integrated CBT model and techniques for treating depression and substance use disorders, the emphasis of the workshop will be on using CBT to treat depression. Role plays and small group activities will give participants an opportunity to both apply the model and practice the techniques. In addition, participants will watch video demonstrations of how CBT interventions are used to develop anti-suicide plans, to address Anhedonia and to increase client self-esteem.
Course Objectives
Participants will
- Become aware of the links between substance use, depression and trauma
- Learn the principles of integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders
- Become familiar with current theories designed to explain the connection between mental health and substance use disorders
- Be able to identify the types of depressive disorders
- Increase their knowledge of depressive symptoms and medical interventions for the treatment of depression
- Be introduced to an integrated CBT model of treatment for substance use disorders and depression
- Be able to identify the schemas thought to underlie depression
- Learn how to utilize CBT case conceptualization to guide treatment planning for clients with depression and a substance use disorder
- Be able to develop a CBT case formulation from case study of a client with depression and a substance use disorder
- Be able to identify the components of a suicide prevention plan
- Learn and practice CBT techniques to address substance use and depression in role plays
- View video demonstrations of CBT interventions for anhedonia and to increase client self-esteem
