State Plan Services
HealthChoices members are eligible to receive state plan services offered by their choice of at least two service providers as well as additional supplemental services that have been approved for use by the BHSSBC HealthChoices Program.
Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS)
- Behavior Consultant: Designs and directs the implementation of a behavior modification intervention plan which is individualized to each individual and family’s needs. They identify behavioral goals and intervention techniques and recommend behavioral change methods and serve as a consultant within the treatment team. They provide assessment, program design, and monitoring.
- Mobile Therapy: Provides intensive therapeutic services to a child and family in settings other than a provider agency or office. Provides child-centered, family-focused, individual, and family psychotherapy that addresses defined problems and will utilize a strengths-based approach, which includes the child and parents/caretakers in the treatment and as members of the treatment team.
- Behavioral Health Technician: Provides one-on-one interventions to an individual in various settings when the behavior without this intervention would require a more restrictive treatment or educational setting. Services include crisis intervention techniques, immediate behavioral reinforcements, emotional support, time-structuring activities, time out strategies, and additional psychosocial rehabilitative activities as prescribed in the treatment plan. Works to transfer those skills to the individual and the individual’s natural supports.
- After School Program (ASP): Community or center-based individualized intensive therapeutic designed to improve social and emotional functioning and meet the unique mental health needs of individuals with a mental health diagnosis in a group setting. Service is provided after school hours.
Crisis Intervention Services
Provides 24 hour/7 day a week assistance for children and adults in need of emergency mental health crisis services and for those at risk to harm themselves or others, psychosis, or in an unstable emotional state. Services can be provided by telephone or in person at almost any place in the community.
Community Residential Rehabilitation (CRR) Host Home
A private residence of a family, other than the home of the child’s parents, that provides a structured living arrangement. It provides maximum supervision, person assistance, and a full range of psycho-social rehabilitation services for children with a behavioral health disorder and who display severe interpersonal adjustment problems and who require an intensive, structured living situation.
Family Based Mental Health Services (FBMHS)
Comprehensive mental health services which provide treatment, casework services, and family support services to individuals with serious mental illness or emotional disturbance who are at risk of psychiatric hospitalization or out-of-home placement and their families. Enables parents to care for their children, strengthen and maintain families, improve coping skills, and reduce the need for out-of-home placements.
Functional Family Therapy (FFT)*
An intensive treatment program for youth with severe behavioral problems, chronic delinquency, and co-occurring diagnoses that includes treatment that involves changing the patterns of how family members communicate, problem solve, and get their needs met. The family will participate in family therapy focused on building specific skills that will improve family relationships, increase protective factors, and reduce risk factors through use of communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, and effective parenting skills.
Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Withdrawal Management and Treatment
Provides 24 hour monitoring, management, and treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs and for individuals at risk for severe emotional or medical withdrawal symptoms.
Inpatient Psychiatric Hospitalization
Provides very intense treatment to stabilize dangerous behaviors in a safe environment. Includes individual, family and group therapy, monitoring, and assessment. Utilized when an individual is at risk to harm themselves or others, psychosis, unstable emotional state, and cannot be maintained in a lesser level of care.
Laboratory and Diagnostic Services
Services include regular office visits and laboratory tests.
Medication Management and Clozapine Support
Clozapine Support is provided by a psychiatrist or nurse to review how you are doing if you take the medication Clozaril. Services include regular office visits and laboratory tests. (Clozapine, Clozaril is a medication used to treat people who have Schizophrenia.)
Mental Health Targeted Case Management
A case manager works with you to help you get the resources and services you need in your community and works to help you set and reach your goals.
Methadone Maintenance and Support
Uses a specific medication therapy to treat addictions to opiates such as heroin or oxycodone.
Mobile Mental Health Treatment
Provides therapeutic services in settings other than a provider agency or office.
Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST)*
An intensive treatment program for children and adolescents intended to promote positive social behavior and decrease antisocial behavior within the family, school, and community. It typically involves an initial evaluation to determine the goals of the therapy for the family, individual therapy with the juvenile and family members, peer interventions, crisis stabilization, and case management over several months.
Outpatient Mental Health/Drug and Alcohol Counseling
Office based weekly or bi-weekly therapy that can be either individual, family, or group and serves individuals with a mental health diagnosis or an alcohol and/or drug dependency or abuse diagnosis who does not require a more intensive level of treatment.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)*
An Evidence-Based parent training program for families who have children with externalizing behavior problems that involves a trained therapist coaching parents as they interact with their children in an outpatient setting. Parents are coached in how to apply skills to increase appropriate child behaviors and decrease inappropriate child behaviors by providing attention to appropriate and ignoring mildly inappropriate behaviors.
Peer Support Services
Peer support occurs when people provide knowledge, experience, emotional, social, or practical help to each other. It commonly refers to an initiative consisting of trained supporters, and can take a number of forms such as peer mentoring, listening, or counseling.
Psychiatric Evaluation and Psychological Testing
Evaluation and testing is usually the first stage of the treatment process to determine your treatment plan.
Psychiatric Partial Hospitalization Services
A nonresidential treatment program which includes psychiatric, psychological, social, and vocational elements under medical supervision. Designed for individuals with moderate to severe mental or emotional disorders who require less than 24 hour care, but more intensive and comprehensive services than are offered in outpatient treatment programs.
Residential Treatment Facilities for Adolescents (RTF)
Intensive therapeutic environment that is operated in a 24 hours living setting in which behavioral health treatment is provided for children with diagnosed mental illness, serious emotional or behavioral disorders, or a severe substance abuse condition and mental illness.
Telepsychiatry
The use of electronic communication and information technologies to provide or support clinical psychiatric care at a distance. This is appropriate in situations where on-site services are not available due to distance, location, time of day, or availability of resources. These services are provided by a psychiatrist using real-time, two-way interactive audio-video transmission. Serves individuals with a mental health diagnosis which can be managed in a lesser intense setting.
